The Really 'Ard Blood Bowl League (RABBL)
Welcome to the homepage of the Really 'Ard Blood Bowl League (RABBL). This is a PBEM Blood Bowl League using Ronald Loker's PBEM tool. A big thank you to Ronald and Tom Anders for developing and supporting this program.

The League was first proposed on 21st March 2002 and the first round of matches of the first season started on the 3rd of April 2002. The League is therefore full with 16 Coaches signed up and playing. However, if you are interested in playing, please contact me - if I get sufficient interest I will extend the League.... drat more work for me!!

The full 4 weeks has been pencilled in to complete each Round of games, however, it is expected (hoped?) that most rounds can finish sooner allowing the League to finish earlier. If time is picked up, then there will be more flexibility for breaks due to holidays etc.

    League Format

The purpose of this League is to test each Coach's all-round game. Hence each Coach does not run his own team but takes control of a team for one game. Each Coach then scores points based on how well his team does in that game. The scoring system is:-

  • +3 points per TD scored
  • +2 points per Casualty scored
  • +12 points for Win
  • +6 points for Tie (no overtime allowed)
  • +3 points for Loss
  • -3 points per TD conceded
  • -2 points per Casualty against
  • -1 point per Fouler Sent Off
  • +2 points for every full 20 TR points difference you have lower (max 5)
  • -2 points for every full 20 TR points difference you have higher (max -5)
  • +10 points if you play with Goblin or Halfling
  • -10 points if you play against Goblin or Halfling

NB only Team Casualties count for League Points. This means that you must cause a casualty by blocking an opponent or injure the opponent when being blocked - pushing into the crowd for an injury doesn't count. In addition, a Team Casualty should be awarded if you successfully foul and injure an opponent - SPPs are not awarded for fouling. No other injuries however sustained (crowd, thrown rock, failed dodge etc) will cause a Team Casualty.

    Selection of Starting Rosters

Each of the (current) 15 official races has one team entered into the League. A second Human team makes the total teams in the League 16. Each Coach selects a race and prepares a starting roster which they use for the first game (note if Coaches select the same race, I will allocate on a first come first served basis - those coaches not obtaining their first choice will be provided with a list of races not yet picked). Prior to the start of the first round of matches, all the team rosters will be posted onto the web-site. This will enable all Coaches to review the rosters chosen to ensure that the rosters are reasonably sensible. If more than 1 Coach believes a roster should be changed, I will email the info to the Coach who has picked the roster outlining the suggestions. The reason for this is that I feel all teams should be as competitive as possible - a poor starting roster may mean a team is doomed from the start. Having said that, just because a roster is not what you would have picked, as long as it is reasonable I will allow it to stand.

    Serious Injuries

Any Serious Injuries incurred in the match played by the previous Coach, will have an impact on the Coach running the team in the next game. Whilst this may even out over time, to make the League as much as possible down to each Coach's skill, any players with Serious Injuries will be removed from the team's roster for the match that they are due to miss. This means that the current Coach will have a reduced Team Rating and, possibly, additional Handicap Rolls. In addition, since points are earned by each Coach if they run a low TR team versus a high TR team, more points. Obviously the opposing Coach will benefit since he/she has less players to battle against.

Match Ups, Skill Selection and Winnings

The match-ups are drawn at random. At the end of each game, each Coach should roll and decide on skill selection. However, although winnings should be rolled for, these should not be spent. Once the first round of matches is completed, a random draw is again made such that no Coach can play with the same team again. Each Coach then has 48 hours to review the roster provided, to make purchases using the winnings from the previous round and to review and change (if required) those skills selected at the end of the previous game (and only the previous game). If no submissions are made within 48 hours the Commish will decide on the roster changes. Match-ups are then drawn at random against teams not yet played. This process continues until the League Season has been completed.

    Team / Player Replacement

If a Team's Rating falls below 90 TR (or if a team has 7 fit players or less), the Coach of that team has an option to replace the team with a new Rookie roster of the same race (this will require the Commish's agreement even if the criteria are met). The new Rookie roster will be subject to review to ensure that it is a reasonable selection for a League.

If a Coach wishes to retire a player, then he should email the Commish with reasons. This will not normally be allowed unless the player has suffered more than 1 niggling injury or has had one or more stat reductions. In addition, the team must have a minimum of 11 fit players before retiring a player. If a team has a full or nearly full roster, players may be retired more easily. Any retired players will automatically become Assistant Coaches (unless the team already has lots of Assistant Coaches!).

    No Overtime to be Played

All matches end after 2 halves of 8 turns each. No overtime will be played (O/T can seriously delay the progress of a PBEM League). For those of you tempted to just play for a draw... remember that you get more points for winning!

The Winner! and Post Season Game(s)

The Season lasts 8 games and the Coach with the most points is the winner. If there is a tie, the winning Coach will be the one whose opponents have scored the most points on average in all their games.

It is currently the intention that the Coach with the most points will pick one of the team rosters and enter a play off against one or more of the other PBEM Leagues.

    Rules

All the Rules of BB2k1 except:

No Freebooting (Wizards, Stars or Other Players).
The Halfling Coach may purchase a Master Chef for 150,000 as a permanent addition to its roster.
    No Bribes allowed.
Players who "Miss Next Game" due to a Serious Injury (not a failed Niggle roll) do not count towards the Team Rating for the game they miss.

Skill Changes (the following skills have been changed to allow a PBEM game to flow more easily)

Side Step acts like Stand Firm on a Block (it doesn't allow a player to remain standing on a failed dodge). In addition, a player with frenzy does not get a second block against a player with Side Step.
Shadowing - the Coach of the dodging player makes the Shadow roll using 2 d6 as follows: Dodging Players Movement - Shadowing Players Movement + 2D6 = 8 or more to stop the Shadowing Player.
Diving Tackle - A player with Diving Tackle will AUTOMATICALLY use this skill against any opposing player leaving his tackle zone UNLESS 1) he is adjacent to the ball, 2) he is adjacent to the opposing ball carrier and the dodging opponent is not the ball carrier, 3) he is adjacent to his own team's ball carrier and the dodging opponent is not blitzing or 4) the Diving Tackle player is holding the ball.

    Other Stats and Information

As well as providing a League Table for the Coaches' performance throughout the season (this will show all the points earned under the points formula described under League Format above), the following information will be provided:-

  • Team League Table - this provides each team's W-L-T record and other salient information
  • Player Leaders - the players leading the various SPP categories (TDs, Completions etc)

    PBEM Etiquette

An average game requires about two to four weeks to play. This means that as a minimum each player should on average complete at least 1 turn per day. I would prefer that each round lasts 3 weeks - I like to get games done! However, any games not finished after 4 weeks will be called so that the next round can start. Once each Round has finished (ie a maximum of 4 weeks - but could be quicker!), the next Round will start. At the start of each round, I will send out the initial game files in zipped format to each Coach. All completed games should be emailed to me in zipped format when finished. If there are any errors in the log, these should be explained in the accompanying email (eg player X was given a casualty by mistake - please reduce SPPs earned by 2).

If a player cannot take any turns for a day or so, please inform your opponent. A few days missed can easily be caught up. However, if your opponent doesn't send you his turn within 24 hours (not having told you this of course!) you should re-send your last turn to him. If after 48 hours you have still not heard, please contact the Commish.

No cheating is allowed. This may sound obvious however, Ronald's PBEM tool has many "cheat" detecting features. So do not use the rewind function to overwrite a failed action. This will get picked up. Any coach found to be cheating will be barred from this League and, in addition, details will be forwarded to Tom Anders' MBBL2 PBEM League. If you make a mistake in the log - explain the mistake and move the players appropriately so that your opponent can see what happened. If any coach is unsure, or feels that a turn has not been completed correctly, he/she should email me a copy of the zipped log file for my adjudication.

    Software

The Software to use to play in this League is version 2.1. The League will use the same version used in the MBBL2. To download the software please follow the link.
